Skandia Spring Bus Tour
Hei Swedes!
On April 16, 2020, Skandia Lodge is planning to sponsor a trip to The Dalles, OR for the LSS. The trip is to include a visit to The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum, Fort Dalles Museum (which includes the Swedish Anderson Homestead), a visit to the Sunshine Mill Winery.
The trip includes the bus rental, snacks on the bus, entrance fees into both museums and a wine tasting at the winery. Lunch will be on your own. Recommended is the wonderful restaurant at the Discovery Center.
Please plan to meet at the Eastport Plaza parking lot the morning of the 16th at 7:45am for a departure at 8am sharp. Approximate time return time is 8pm. Parking is free.
This is a fun trip that promises Scandinavian history as well as Oregon history.
First you will visit the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center which is home to numerous exhibits to help introduce visitors to the geology, flora, fauna, history, and economic development of the Gorge. Learn how balance among many competing interests is helping preserve the region for future generations.
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area stretches 85 miles on both sides of one of the largest waterways on the continent. Protected by the National Scenic Act in 1986, the region is home to an incredible combination of spectacular landscapes, rare plants, wildlife, recreational opportunities, farmland, ancient Indian rock art, and the other cultural and historic sites.
It is recognized internationally as the destination for exploring the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Pacific Northwest.
At Fort Dalles Museum you may be able to taste Mrs. Anderson's famous Sour Cream Cookies - oftentimes served at the Anderson Homestead itself. Fort Dalles Museum, in The Dalles, Oregon, is housed in the former Surgeon’s Quarters; the only remaining officer’s quarters of the 1856 Fort Dalles military complex. One of Oregon’s oldest history museums, it first opened its doors in 1905.
A group of civic-minded pioneer women were instrumental in saving the building at the turn of the century. Through an act of Congress it became the property of the Oregon Historical Society as they were a recognized non-profit organization. OHS authorized the ladies of the “Old Fort Dalles Historical Society” to open it as a museum in 1905.
And, the winery, well, it speaks for itself!
All members of organizations under the LSS umbrella are welcome! If you have non-member friends or family they may also travel with the group for an additional $5/person.
Trip Cost: $60 members/$65 non-members
